The IRSESC foundation not only stands for the historical memory of mental illness but
also for the history of Venice itself, as well as a centre of studies on marginalization and social discomfort on a larger scale.
It actively promotes research, conferences and exhibitions.
The foundation was established by will of the Province of Venice in 1979 with the purpose of protecting, classifying and safekeeping
the documents that embodied the history of the Insane Asylum (later, the Psychiatric Hospital) of San Servolo.
